SECRETS OF BENARES: Superstars, secret doors and standout dishes
Benares, the celebrated Michelin-starred Indian restaurant in Mayfair, reopened in the new year following a major refurbishment. These enhancements mark an exciting new chapter for Benares as it continues to redefine contemporary Indian dining in London.
The New Look
Inspired by the holy city of Varanasi, the renovation transforms the guest experience from arrival, with a vibrant entrance, lush planters, and a dramatic candle wall. The reimagined bar features bespoke furniture, perfect for cocktails or an extended evening. The main dining room, now rich with colour and texture, showcases ornate ceiling artwork and intricate Jali panels, evoking the spiritual energy of its namesake city.
The Cuisine
Since opening in 2003, Benares has been a pioneer of Indian cuisine, blending the finest British ingredients with authentic Indian techniques and flavours. To accompany the restaurant’s fresh design, Executive Chef Sameer Taneja has curated an innovative menu that showcases the true essence of the restaurant’s legacy and craftsmanship. The new menu includes Dum Ka Truffle Shorba, a luxurious winter truffle and rabbit stew; Vindaloo with oysters and Goan sausage served with sanna – a steamed coconut and rice bun; and to finish, Rasmalai infused with rose, cardamom and vanilla. The classics section of the menu also brings back beloved dishes and traditional curries, such as Kukkad (Chicken) Makhani and Meat Korma.
Five Things to Know About Benares
The Secret Door Mystery
The secret door will always remain a secret, but here’s a little hint—only VIPs walk through fire and spice at Benares.
Health & Lifestyle – A Sparkling Partnership
One of the things we’re most excited about this year is our exclusive partnership with Pol Roger, featuring a special event hosted by the sixth generation of the Pol Roger family with Martin Heidsieck.
Celebrity Encounters at Benares
Benares has had its fair share of memorable celebrity moments! One famous story is when Woody Harrelson arrived wearing shorts and was politely declined entry—he quickly went shopping, returned 30 minutes later, and dined in style. More recently, a certain Gladiator (yes, that Gladiator) enjoyed a meal with us.
Benares’ Most Popular Dish & Drink
Our Oyster Vindaloo is a standout favorite, bringing together spice and the sea in a unique way. And when it comes to cocktails, the Passion Fruit Chutney Martini takes the top spot.
The Heart of Benares
What truly sets Benares apart is our dedication to bringing high-quality Indian culture and cuisine to Mayfair—something we’ve upheld for 22 years. Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of working with some of the finest Indian chefs in London, from Rohit Ghai to Atul Kochhar, and now Chef Sameer Taneja.
