From Cards to Castles: The Story of Brownsword Hotels

11th Oct 2024

Long before Andrew and Christina Brownsword became renowned for their stunning collection of hotels, Andrew had already left a lasting mark on British business. In the 1980s, he founded the beloved Forever Friends brand, bringing joy to millions with his iconic greeting cards. After selling the business to Hallmark in 1994, Andrew set his sights on a new challenge—breathing life into historic properties across the UK. The Brownsword Hotels collection was born out of a desire to preserve the unique charm of each location while creating luxurious experiences for sophisticated modern travellers. Today, their hotels offer more than just a place to stay—they provide a warm, personal touch where every detail reflects their passion for originality and hospitality.

The Drawing Room at The Bath Priory, Bath

The journey began in 1994 with The Bath Priory, a local dining favourite of the Brownswords’ that had seen better days. Their vision was simple yet ambitious: to restore the property to its former grandeur while creating a welcoming charm. This success laid the foundation for a growing portfolio of distinctive hotels, each blending classic architecture with contemporary comforts. Sydney House Chelsea followed in 2001, marking the expansion into a growing boutique portfolio known for its exceptional guest experiences.

In 2005, they acquired Gidleigh Park, a cherished destination they had long enjoyed as guests. After extensive renovations, it became a flagship property and trailblazer for fine dining and countryside luxury, with Michael Caines as Head Chef for 21 years before he established Lympstone Manor.

When von Essen Hotels went into administration in 2011, Andrew snapped up four of its properties: the stunning Amberley Castle, to the elegant Buckland Manor, Lower Slaughter Manor, now The Slaughterers Manor House, and across the road The Slaughters Country Inn. Each hotel in the Brownsword collection tells its own story, imbued with its own unique personality and a blend of art, design, history and hospitality. Whether in a countryside manor or a city hotel, guests can expect the same dedication to quality and attention to detail, from thoughtfully curated menus to beautifully designed interiors.

As the collection grew, so too did the Brownswords’ reputation for excellence. Their approach to hospitality has always been about creating spaces that feel like a home away from home, where guests are treated not just as visitors but as part of the story.

Today, the Brownsword Hotels collection continues to evolve, balancing fine dining with more relaxed, approachable options, such as the likes The Pantry and Terrace Bar at The Bath Priory. Yet their core values – originality, personality, and quality – remain unchanged, ensuring each stay feels like a warm, personal experience crafted with care.
