Great Fosters – main hall

Great Fosters has a long and celebrated history – you can practically feel the regal connections as you step inside the front door into the main hall. With a Saxon moat which dates around 500 AD still surrounding the property, the main house is documented as being used by Henry VIII as a hunting lodge. Above the main porch is the original royal crest of Queen Elizabeth 1 and interior ceiling crests denote those of Anne Boleyn, her mother. Turner prize nominated David Shrigley has transformed the Gallery at sketch as part of a long-term programme of artist-conceived restaurants. 239 new works line the restaurant’s walls, forming the largest group of original drawings David Shrigley has ever exhibited. The work continues on the tables with new tableware featuring Shrigley’s distinctive mordant drawings and texts in a holistic interaction with Mater Chef Pierre Gagnaire’s good. The meal itself becomes a site-specific sculptural work that references sketch’s location in the heart of London and invites diners to respond with their own thoughts and reactions.
